On a day that the FA Cup took center stage we saw two of the remaining top four teams in England knocked out. Manchester United and Chelsea both went into their ties with Portsmouth and Barnsely respectively as favorites, but their opponents had other ideas.
The FA Cup weekend started at noon with Manchester United taking on Portsmouth at Old Trafford. The game was all Man Utd, but they failed to take their chances, having a couple cleared off the line and having a faint penalty appeal turned down. They lost Edwin Van Der Sar at half time through injury so he was replaced by Thomas Kuszcak. The sub keeper was then sent off for bringing down Milan Baros in the penalty area who looked certain to score and this meant, that with Man Utd having no keeper on the bench that Rio Ferdinand was to take up the gloves and face Sulley Muntari’s penalty.
Muntari scored the penalty and Portsmouth held out to advance to the Semi Finals of the FA Cup.
In the other FA Cup tie of the day, Chelsea faced Championship side Barnsley at Oakwell. Barnsely were in the Quarter Finals after knocking out Liverpool in the 6th Round. They started brighter and created some early chances. Chelsea were lucky to go into half time with the scores at 0-0.
The second half started as the first did, with Barnsley looking up for it and creating some great chances. They eventually were rewarded for their hard work with a cross coming in from the wing and the big and powerful Odeyjayi rose above Cudicini to head the ball home. Oakwell went wild and Chelsea were behind.
For the last quarter of the game Barnsley were under the cosh. Chelsea could have drawn level with some good chances at the end but Barnsley held on to produce another cup upset.
The other semi final games today are;
Cardiff v Middlesbrough
West Brom v Bristol Rovers
The FA Cup is now wide open with none of the big four in it and with only two Premier League teams left in it, one if Cardiff beat Middlesbrough then a lower league club will really fancy their chances of winning it.
Back to the Premier League action, and there was three games played yesterday.
Liverpool thumped sorry Newcastle 3-0 at home to increase the misery for Kevin Keegan’s side who haven’t won since he took over and are now right in a relegation battle. Goals for Liverpool from Jermaine Pennant, Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard wrapped the game up with the third.
Reading took on Europe chasing Man City. Kevin Doyle opened the scoring for Reading after 62 minutes and Man City were put to bed when Dave Kiton added a late 2nd for Reading to ease their relegation fears and move them five points away from the drop zone. Man City remain in a top ten position but are now further off the pace for a European place.
In the third and final Premier League game of the day Fulham took on Blackburn. It was an evenly fought out contest which ended in a 1-1 draw. Jason Roberts crossed for Morton Gamst Pederson to head home after 59 minutes, but Fulham equalised with a late free kick scored by Jimmy Bullard, a spectacular free kick it was as well.
