Manchester City kept their hopes of snatching a UEFA Cup place alive as they beat fellow UEFA Cup hopefuls Portsmouth 3-1 at The City of Manchester Stadium this afternoon.

Man City got off to the perfect start, David James’ poor decision making saw Darius Vassell tap the ball into the open goal after only 11 minutes.

Martin Petrov then doubled City’s lead as his effort was deflected off Sol Campbell and into the net past a helpless James.

On 24 minutes a goal from John Utaka brought Portsmouth back into the game, although still a goal behind.

Portsmouth had Herman Hreidarsson sent off just before half time as he fouled Vassell.

Benjani made sure of the points on 84 minutes with a cracking shot that flew past David James.

The result see’s Portsmouth stay in 7th on 57 points, with Man City climbing to 8th with 55 points, and both sides are still in with a chance of getting a UEFA Cup spot.
