Two goals from in form Everton striker Yakubu ensured that Everton remained in fourth position in the Premier League. They beat Portsmouth 3-1 at Goodison Park this afternoon in a match that was crucial for both teams. Both Portsmouth and Everton are gunning for European football next season so a win was vital for each side, but Everton came out on top to snatch all three points.

Yakubu opened the scoring in the very first minute when he headed home a free kick from Steven Pienaar. From that moment on Everton dominated proceddings. However they were left stunned when a Glen Johnson cross was touched faintly by Jermian Defoe and ran into the net to draw Pompey level.

Everton had to wait until the 73rd minute to get back in front and it was Tim Cahill who scored the goal to effectively end the match. Another cross from Steven Piernaar was met by Tim Cahill whose header was smashed home past Daivd James in the Pompey goal.

Eight minutes later and Yakubu wrapped up the game with his second goal of the game, a superb goal as he ghosted past Sol Campbell and then hit a unstoppable shot past James in the Portsmouth goal.
